Red Cardigan 4 Ways

Styling a red cardigan 4 ways: Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in white jeans, red and white striped tee and red espadrilles

Dear friends. After all the Covid shenanigans last week, I'm now fully restored to good health and as you read this I will be with my mother in Plymouth for our long awaited get together.

Today I'm creating four different outfits based on one cardigan.  It's got very cold again here in the UK after a few days of "Fool's Spring," so a cardigan is a must-have.

My cardigan is the Susannah from Kettlewell, available in 8 colors. Mine is Cherry Red. I thought instantly of a casual outfit with my cherry and white striped Pima tee, also from Kettlewell, and my new spring acquisitions:  white jeans and red espadrilles.

I tried on 15 pairs of white jeans before I settled on these:  they're M&S Magic straight jeans, also available in petite. The espadrilles are by Sosander, also via M&S. I sized up in the jeans which I'll probably regret. The 10 fitted better in the leg and hips, but if you wear a tighter fitting top, tucked in, you get a muffin, whereas you (or rather,. "I") don't, in the size 12, which is a US size 8. The polka dot belt is also from Kettlewell and fun for a cheeky bit of easy pattern mixing.

Next up: I couldn't resist wearing my cherry earrings, bought in a church bazaar a few years ago, and cherry patterned shoes (Poetic Licence) with the cherry red cardigan.  The skirt is over 10 years old, from M&S.  The essential white V is from Kettlewell.  Here's a close-up showing my fabulous lipstick, Velvet Ribbon from Lisa Eldridge, and a glimpse of the cherry earrings.

I then slipped the cardigan over my Fabienne Chapot plaid dress, bought for a milestone birthday in 2020 which never happened  (well the birthday happened, but the lovely dinner was postponed to last year because of a lockdown). The boots, old, came from Lotus. Handbag is from the Cambridge Satchel Co.

And finally, a look suitable for the office:  I created a column in the color Mole, which is a cool grey toned brown, ideal for those coded Winter, using a Kettlewell Tessa skirt and scoop necked top. I added my cardigan and an infinity scarf from Kettlewell in Mole and Tango Red. I wasn't sure what color tights to wear. I tried red, but it was too much, so I settled on black and anchored the black with a wide black waist belt.

It's a good exercise when you're shopping your wardrobe to play around with creating several looks with one key piece.

I used links to help with shopping but they're not affiliate links, and nothing was gifted for this post.

Now it's time for the #WowOnWednesday link-up. Bloggers/Instagrammers can find new readers, plus readers can find new blogs to read. I promote my favorite five posts on Facebook and Twitter every week, and feature the most clicked posts in Instagram Stories.

  1. Such a pretty and vibrant cardi Gail. ALL of these outfits are gorgeous and TBH I have no favourite, love men all. Thanks for the heads up on those white jeans, I’m on the search for some and last years ”high” waisted jeans I bought from Marks cut short of the waist and muffined me too.
    Hugs xxx.
