Are We All Having a Low-Key Christmas?

 & WowOnWednesday

Is This Mutton contemplates a quieter Christmas this year in view of soaring costs and the need to be more sustainable. Editor in chief Gail Hanlon in lime and white striped top and lime short tie wrap

Dear friends. The threat of what the Met Office is calling the "Troll from Trondheim"has made me finally relinquish my five tog duvet in favour of the 13.5 tog monster. Last winter, I managed to get by with the lighter duvet and a blanket.

December. Nearly the end of the year! Although this is the first Christmas since 2019 that hasn't had a Covid threat hanging over it,  it's going to be a tough one to celebrate for many.  Energy prices are going through the roof - our bills are quadrupling - plus inflation is galloping ahead and food prices are soaring.

Not to mention a shortage of turkeys because of avian flu. I can't help thinking that's not such a bad thing, because I firmly believe nobody really likes turkey, we only have it because it's suitable for feeding large numbers of people. But other free range birds like geese and ducks will also be in short supply.

On the bright side, most of my present shopping is done, but we are all having fewer presents this year, mainly because we don't need more "stuff."

The Christmas tree is in its box waiting to be put up. This year it's the pre-decorated pop up tree. I'm not going to go overboard on decorations and the usual tree this year. It seems we're all having a lower-key than usual Christmas. Or is it just us?

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS FASHION CHALLENGE

The Kettlewell Colour Club is running its annual challenge which is guaranteed to live up to its name - challenge - on a couple of the days.

My outfits today are from the first few days of the challenge.

Since I was re-rated as a light spring in colour analysis,  I have gravitated towards lighter colours.  The prompt "Jewel Brights" was a bit scary but I dug out a Kettlewell true red skirt, which I bought pre-loved, and added a poppy top and cream/sunshine yellow striped top, plus tights which have red spots.

I love patterned or distinctive hosiery, plus eye catching boots.

The picture at the top of the post is for the prompt "Favourite stripes." I have a few striped t-shirts now, but I didn't use to wear stripes at all. I find the t-shirts are great to slip under another top for an extra layer. The neon lime and white t-shirt makes me think of summer. I'm going to wear bright colours all year. They're more uplifting!

And talking of layers,  "Rainbow layers" was another prompt that I found challenging. Not so much the layering, but the rainbow aspect.  I prefer to dress tonally, or to pair just two colours with a neutral. Here I layered up a yellow roll neck with a pansy v-neck, purple trousers and the Kettlewell Chloe jacket in lavender.

To brave that Troll, I've added my lavender coat  (although in reality, it will need a puffer coat and more!), and for a rainbow splash, here's my Kurt Geiger Rainbow bag.

I was on safe ground with "favourite neutrals."  As a light spring, my neutrals are brown, grey, bright navy and cream and off white.  Definitely no black.  I find grey and any shade of navy quite depressing, so I've been on the hunt for brightly coloured trousers and skirts.  Here I'm wearing the Kettlewell ruched skirt in chocolate with a v neck in a very pale yellow, primrose, and a wrap in light sand. The animal print bag and rose gold boots add a bit of interest.

  1. We agreed to not give gifts to each other, but then I thought, oh why not. We only do small gifts, just a few. But other then that I want to celebrate Christmas to the fullest. We haven't been with family for 2 years and now we are again. Your lavender look is fabulous Gail! It looks so amazing on you!
