The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton looks into the archive to find examples of good, bad and ugly outfits

The inspiration for today's post comes unashamedly from Dutch blogger Greetje from No Fear of Fashion. She recently featured outfits from past posts, which she classified as good, bad or ugly. See her post

If you haven’t discovered Greetje's blog you're in for a treat. She goes out with friends to take her photos and explores different parts of the Netherlands with a lot of humour and style.

I've chosen a few pictures from 2017/2018, when I was working with a different lifestyle and more experimental, plus a few more recent photos.

It's been fascinating because I can see certain traits (bad) and habits which fortunately I no longer have.

Let's start with the Bad.

These are mostly linked by accessory overkill. I used to have a thing for quirky patterned shoes and strange hosiery choices.

Left to right:  the first outfit is ruined by the Gok Wan style belt. It looks very ugly against the floral skirt  (which I bought again last year on ebay, having given away the original).  I was probably trying to avoid tucking the blouse and hoping to create a waist.

The second outfit has two fairly nice components, the butter yellow jumper with feather trim and the lilac leopard skirt, but the skirt is too voluminous and the boots are far too baggy.

Third outfit:  I had expected the Bombshell Dress to make me look curvy but was disappointed when I didn't.  The worst aspect is the tights and shoes. I was wearing the outfit on a chilly day in April and needed to wear tights, but I couldn't decide what colour. In the end I went for nude fishnets.  I had a similar dilemma with shoes and wore a pair with a cherry print. I think they and the tights just look hideous. The length of the dress is wrong. I still don't know what might have worked better.  I don't do heels now, except for wedges in summer.  Red tights would have been too much. Any ideas?

Fourth outfit: I think this outfit actually looks OK, but it's just so ....mad! I was in the Style Inspired by Art challenge and wanting to create a Spanish looking outfit.  I sent for the skirt (Asos) and promptly sent it back. I would never have worn this outside in a million years.

Fifth outfit: The delicate silky skirt is overwhelmed by the clompy boots, and the top looks staid.

Final look:  I like the outfit, which represents my gamine essence  (discovered in around 2024, late in life!) but I think the tights are wrong. Bare legs would have been better.

Moving now to the Ugly. Gird your loins.

These outfits are mostly over styled and trying too hard. Once again we see poor use of accessories.

Left to right:  I wanted to have a chic Parisian look but it's a Non.  I look ridiculous.  Second outfit:  I found good ways to style this long cardigan but this wasn't one of them. The scarf looks clownish. Third outfit: pleated skirts never look good on me. This one hits my legs at exactly the wrong point, and with the hideous shoes, my legs look like tree trunks. Fourth and fifth:  the same skirt is styled atrociously. It's not a bad length  (I prefer knee or just below), but I had no idea what colours or tops to wear with it.  Adding the patterned tights is too much pattern with the skirt - and ditto the patterned shoes in the last pic!

Finally some outfits which I think worked.

Left to right:  the first outfit was a TU by Sainsbury's dress with over-the-knee boots. The leopard bag and necklace seem right.  Second:  quite adventurous for me and I had reservations about the tights, but looking at it again, the proportions look good. I even like the tights against the coral, and with the top.  Third outfit: this was during the lockdown when I was pining for work (!) and lamenting the fact that I no longer had the chance to wear a corporate look.  This was my MaxaMara jacket and Vivienne Westwood skirt. I felt on top of the world in this!  Fourth outfit:  I love retro styles but I'm always afraid they will make me look dated, or worse, "mutton."  I had lots of compliments for this outfit and feel good in it.   Fifth pic:  I was professionally styled here. I wouldn't have chosen the trousers myself (I expected them to make me look fat) but I liked the styling.

Love to hear what you think on any of my assessments.  Do tell in the comments.
