Effortless Chic - in Colour

 And TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton, over 60s blogger Gail Hanlon, is not impressed by claims that French women are effortlessly chic. She considers their neutrals based approach unadventurous. Instead she is encouraging women to wear bright colours all through autumn and winter.

Dear friends. We're constantly being told that French women are "effortlessly chic," clad as they invariably are in jeans, a blazer and a dash of red lipstick. Minimal and pared back, yes. But also - boring! Lacking any individuality. No sense of adventure.

That's my controversial take. Nobody is going to rush up to you in the street to compliment you on wearing neutrals.

I like to live my life in colour;  it makes me happy, and also those around me. I quite often get stopped in the street with people commenting on what I'm wearing.

In the next few weeks I'll show you how to continuously wear colour throughout the gloomier months.

I'm starting with a staple, brown, which is still very trendy in AW 26.  Brown is much better for me, being a warm shade, than black, but I still need to lighten and brighten it for best effect.

I used a new scarf from Ladycrow as the basis for my outfit, and added a tee in aqua, cream jeans (M&S) and Mary Janes (John Lewis). The jacket is a preloved Roxy (Kettlewell) in Coffee.

The flared jeans and cheetah belt make the outfit look contemporary. My aqua bag is from Pom London. Everything was bought by me.

I tend to keep the make-up very light these days. I no longer use foundation, just a little cream concealer on problem areas, plus lipstick and blush in a coral shade.

I've been neglecting style and beauty posts lately, after the summer of cycling, but I have plenty of posts planned to keep the colour theme going.

You'll want to join me next week when I show you how I'm dealing with some of the indignities of ageing (crepey skin, peach fuzz, hairs on the chin, frizzy hair, aching joints and so on.....). I will give you the lowdown on what does, and doesn't, work. I bought everything myself so you'll know you're getting a genuine opinion.

What do you think about the "effortless chic" of French women? Do you find it a bit unadventurous and safe? Do tell in the comments.
