Bright Outfits, Chewbacca and Abba!

& #WowOnWednesday

How to wear bright colours over 50. Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in orange, yellow and turquoise
Dear friends. I don't expect you ever thought you'd see that triumvirate feature together in a style blog.  Put your feet up, this could be a long post.

Further to my January Brights post, here are more colourful outfits which I've been wearing for various challenges on IG/FB, and on outings.

The outfit at the top is very bright for me.  I've come a long way since last June when I was re-rated as a spring. Initially, I tried a couple of corals and oranges and thought they were not for me, but since then I've re-evaluated them. I'm suddenly quite keen on orange.

I'm wearing a pair of bright blue jeggings which are currently in stock at M&S, with a canary supersoft jacket and peach cocktail pima V neck from Kettlewell, along with old boots from Sainsbury's.

A purple coat gets a pop of colour from a rainbow bag and scarf in spring colours. As styled by Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton

Purple remains a favourite. I was very lucky to be gifted this Studio by Preen coat by Penny from Frugal Fashion Shopper when we met recently for afternoon tea. I love it!  It has a tie waist, which I like, and statement sleeves. And it's very warm. I've rediscovered the joy of wearing a "proper" winter coat, with gloves and bag, rather than a grotty old puffer.

I'm wearing it with my Spring season scarf from My Season Jewellery & Accessories, rainbow bag from Kurt Geiger,  lilac brogues from The Bias Cut (old) and lobelia trousers from Robell.

I took the purple coat, along with my green one, along to Stratford in East London where I met up with Margery who trained with me as a journalist over 40 years ago. She's also a published author  (I'm well jel).  Margery travelled from Dorset to go to see Abba Voyage with me at the purpose built, eco-friendly Abba Arena.

Margery had a spectacular pink faux fur coat.   Here are the 3 coats in our hotel room  (those on IG who thought all three were mine ---- even I would draw the line at taking three coats for an overnight stay!).

Casual brights: lime green jumper from M&S with jeans and green boots as Is This Mutton's crusade continues to get women wearing bright colours over 50

Above:  a casual look featuring a lime green jumper which was the first thing I bought in February after my "clothes fast" in January. I couldn't resist this spring-like colour.  Still in stock at M&S.

Chewbacca's Legacy Lives On

Back to Abba and Chewbacca.  I'll talk more about the Abba Voyage experience in my February review  post, for #whatsbeenonyourcalendar, next Friday (24th). But the whole thing has now become inexorably linked to Chewbacca from Star Wars.

Margery and I stayed in a hotel overnight and were watching BBC Breakfast News when they featured a forthcoming sale of Star Wars artefacts which had been found in the attic of a house where the Chewbacca actor, the late Peter Mayhew, had lived.

The programme featured quite a long montage of Chewbacca photos with the background noise being the curious vocabulary of Chewie, namely groans and grunts.

Margery is a big fan of Star Wars  (I was less keen).

Meanwhile the hubster was watching at home, and said to me later, "What were the BBC playing at? It was two and a half minutes of noise!"  (If you want to experience this for yourself,  there is a splendid montage of everything Chewbecca ever "said" on YouTube).

The lovely thing was that the sale was halted after a plea from Peter's family. His widow, Angie, asked if the sale could be stopped, saying leaving the items was one of her husband's "biggest regrets". Peter had health issues, and at 7ft 3, was unable to get into the attic to retrieve them when they moved house.

Auctioneer Angus Ashworth said he was "happy" to return the items. He said: "The monetary value of the lot is fairly modest, but knowing how much it means to the Peter Mayhew foundation, and given that it had been in the attic for over 24 years, the vendors are quite happy to donate it to the foundation to have permanently within their personal collection, not for profit, so that fans can access it in perpetuity."

Don't you just love a story with a happy ending.

There's plenty going on at Is This Mutton this week. Pop back on Thursday for #TellUsAbout...where Debbie's prompt is Play.  And on Friday I'll be sharing a UK company that gives new life to second-hand cashmere, making this an affordable and sustainable luxury.

  1. I think bold colours are fun and can really make a statement. That purple coat is absolutely stunning. That is one of my favourite hues as well. I like the richness off it and how it goes with many different outfit ideas. Thank you for featuring me and I’m glad you enjoyed my post. Have a lovely week. https://www.bauchlefashion.com/2023/02/inside-latest-heart-shaped-handbag-trend.html?spref=pi&ssp_iabi=1676437347652&m=1
