Denim - Not Jeans: Style Not Age Challenge

Wearing a denim dress over 60. Gail Hanlon in midi denim dress from Asos with white ankle boots and orange belt.

Dear friends. Jacqui's challenge to style something in denim other than jeans turned out to be quite the challenge! I could have used my denim jacket but I styled it just last week and featured it here. I used to have a denim dress but it strained across the front buttons so I hardly ever wore it.  I do like a denim dress though, particularly for this transitional time of year, so I ordered this one from Asos.

Can a woman over 50 look good in a denim dress, jacket or skirt? Find out in the Style Not Age Challenge. Here Gail Hanlon,, an over-60s blogger from Is This Mutton, styles an Asos midi denim dress with white boots and orange belt.

I like the shirring detail around the waist which creates some shaping.  On the site the model wears it with the buttons undone and a top underneath, another good idea for the cold weather we're still "enjoying."

I accessorized with a neon orange belt (Kettlewell) and white boots, old. Orange boots would have been nice but still searching for a pair! Now let's see how my style friends got on.

Jacqui from Mummabstylish, whose challenge this was, is sharing a denim skirt she found on Ebay after a long search. It's from New Look and is now sold out so she was thrilled to find it.

Jacqui teamed it with an old blouse from M & S after seeing someone wearing denim with yellow and thinking it looked cool.  I love this pop of zesty yellow.  Jacqui added tan accents with slouch boots, belt and little shoulder bag bought in Venice.

Hilda from Over the Hilda was also a bit stumped but found a denim jacket in Primark and used it for a few pics. She says the jacket is lovely but not her style so it went back to Primark.

I was surprised that even Anna from Anna's Island Style found this a tough challenge.  She then remembered she had a denim jacket hidden at the back of the wardrobe.  Anna dressed it up with brooches a few years ago and that's how it stayed. Her trousers and white cowboy boots are both from Topshop and the sweater is old from Primark.

Emma from Stylesplash also chose a denim dress, but hers is a 1980s batwing dress bought on ebay.  It's in a totally different style to mine, a lighter wash and shorter. I love the applique detail on the shoulder.  Emma has accessorized with silver sparkly boots from New Look and a cute snakeskin bag. Love her diamanté ring and bracelet!

I hope our different interpretations of denim - not jeans - has given you some inspiration. Do you have many items of denim other than jeans? Do let us know in the comments.
