What I Wore on Holiday

 & WowOnWednesday

Gail Hanlon on holiday in Greece wearing a cream cotton dress and backed by bougainvillea

Dear friends. We're back from the Greek island of Skiathos and had a fantastic time. I've written about Skiathos a few times and have linked to those posts below.  In this post I'm going to reflect on my holiday wardrobe and what worked/didn't work.

As an inveterate list maker, I wrote a list of what to pack, and then didn't follow it. Madness. During the day, which we spent relaxing on the beach, I had some new Seafolly Amnesia kaftans which are so easy to slip on and come in great colours (yellow, below). I had two new swimsuits, a green one by Roidal and a gorgeous papaya one from Charmline, both from Simply Beach. I spend quite a lot on swimwear because it flatters a lot more, and doesn't go out shape, unlike cheaper costumes.

l took a couple of pairs of white shorts with a few tops for trips into Skiathos Town during the day. So far so good  (except that both pairs of shorts got grubby and could only be worn once. I wasn't planning to wash clothes on holiday).

Evenings are fairly casual on Skiathos, so I planned a Kettlewell capsule of tops in my spring colours which I could wear with two skirts or three pairs of cropped trousers, plus a dress I've never worn. I also took a few of my crystal necklaces to dress them up a bit.  I'm not really into jumpsuits or dresses if I'm honest.

However, I'm a maximalist and had pre-bought extra baggage allowance, so I felt a bit hard done by not having a different outfit for every evening as I normally do.  My case only weighed 19 kg (I could have had 25!).

Somehow I took the wrong mix of colours.

I took 4 tops in blues (four!), two in apricot, one in cream and two in green,  and none in yellow or pink. The one scarf I took looked great with aquamarine but didn't work with the two apricot tops I took. I had planned to wear a lot of lime and took a lime wrap, top and pair of lime cropped trousers. However I wore the crops on the outbound flight, spilled something on them, and didn't have my second pair.

I also took the wrong type of tops.  Ideally I wanted fairly fitted tops that would look smart with the skirts or crops. But I found that most of my tops were a bit more loose fitting. I should have taken my Kettlewell sleeveless or Darcey tops instead, which have a double front and can be worn on top of a skirt or trouser to give a good shape.  Below:  the one sleeeveless top I took, with a pre-loved Ghost skirt.

I was on my way to the Windmill Restaurant, which has wonderful views of the town and Old Port,  but is quite a steep climb.  Well worth it though.

The one dress I took was bought for £4 at a charity shop in Wimbledon last summer when I went with friends from the Colourful Croydon Coffee Club on a sweep of the town's charity shops. It's a simple dress, no label, but I prefer plain or colour blocked dresses to patterns. I took one evening bag, a gold sequin bag which is big enough to hold our sunglasses cases, phones, etc.

My beauty kit was a big success:  I snapped up two summer beauty bags from M&S and Cult Beauty, and took some of the products with me. Here are the products I loved most:
  • Clinique Dramatically Different moisturiser for daytime and Barbara Sturm Rich Face Cream for evening
  • Omorovicza facial mist:  a fantastic spritz on a hot day
  • Nails Inc nail polish in Coral Street.  I had a pedicure using this the day before we left.
  • Eyeko Beach waterproof mascara: lived up to its name
I was pleased I took a Nomad eyeshadow palette because it was fun to use eyeshadows on a few evenings. I took 3 lipsticks and a new blusher which I didn't really need, Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Peach Pop. I've got a new concealer which is so good I don't need foundation. It's by Huda Beauty #FauxFilterConcealer, shade Meringue. It's great on under eye circles because it doesn't gather in the lines after a couple of hours.

My only beauty fail was taking two hair conditioners and no shampoo. Fortunately the hotel's bottle of Olive Care shampoo was fine for my newly highlighted hair which I treat with great care.

So that was my holiday wardrobe.  What's your approach to packing and outfits in general on vacation? Do let us know in the comments.

  2. Hi, I love the colours you have chosen especially turquoise. I'm back from a med cruise so took maxi dresses for evenings and shorts and tees for the daytime. I got some laundered because the shorts got grubby when we were on excursions. I wore a long white shirt over my swimwear (as did many other ladies....I think we all went to marks and Spencer lol). The only thing I could have done with more of were sandals. I have them in many colours but took a couple of flats, some black heels and some wedges.

    1. Sounds perfect! My shoes were exactly right, I took white trainers for the planes and any walks, flip flops and two pairs of pretty gold.sandals.

  3. Love your holiday choices, gorgeous kaftan and what a great find with your dress - it looks beautiful quality and a classic style. Having just returned from holiday myself, I pack with great intentions to only take what I’m going to wear, and mostly fail by taking too much. I’m improving though and with baggage weight restrictions it makes sense to pack smartly.
