And #TuesdayTwirl
Dear friends. We've been to the Lake District in the north of England for a few days. We enjoyed beautiful autumn weather with plenty of blue skies. We took the bikes, using the new trailer for the first time. It was a good time of rest and recovery.
The pic above shows me at Castlerigg, a Neolithic Stones circle not far from Keswick. I find these sites fascinating.
As we've done for several years, we stayed at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel. Situated in a peaceful hamlet, it's very close to fells such as Catbells, Maiden Moor and Eye Spy (a wonderful ridge walk combines all three). The food is excellent. Above: the view from the dining room. The stone cottage in the foreground is called Gratitude Cottage, and it's available for rent. It accommodates quite a large number of people. One day maybe.....
Here's the view from our bedroom. Our room was called Castle Crag as it overlooks the fell of this name (above) which is a lovely walk from the hotel. It's a short fell (hill) in terms of height but is built on a former slate mine. There are lots of loose slates and stones which make it a bit of a challenge, particularly in wet weather.
These two cheeky Herdwick sheep had "escaped " from the adjoining field to enjoy the hotel's grounds. We were having afternoon tea when we heard the farmer on a quad bike, with two sheep dogs. They were directing the flock into a different area. The two sheep knew the game was up and jumped over the fence to re-join the flock.
This was the first time I've put my new ebike through its paces properly. I was a bit nervous about Honister Pass, which has a 20% incline in places. But the bike, which has less power than its predecessor, managed the ascent with no problems.
View near Catbells of Derwentwater.
Our longest bike ride was 42 miles, one we love which takes us past Blencathra through country lanes and over to Caldbeck, where there's a mill cafe and a lovely shop called The Woolclip.
