This Old Thing? - Style Not Age Challenge

Gail Hanlon with two old things: paste jewellery that belonged to her grandmother, and

Dear friends. It's my turn with this month's Style Not Age Challenge, and I chose "This old Thing" as the theme. How many times have we said that to a loved one, when asked about something new we're wearing?

My old thing is genuinely old. I'm wearing jewellery that belonged to my Grandma:  a pair of clip-on earrings and matching brooch.

My Grandmother, Kathleen Lovis, was very smartly dressed, and always wore a brooch.  She liked to rummage at jumble sales and charity shops which is where she found most of her jewellery. Here's a picture of us, taken around 1980. A brooch is visible!

The set I'm wearing is referred to now as "paste jewellery."  Paste was a special type of flint glass that emulates a number of gemstones.

The origins of paste jewellery date back to the mid-18th century, to a jeweller named Georges Frederic Stras, who worked as a jeweller to the king when he moved from Strasbourg to Paris in 1724. Pieces from the 50s, from brands Juliana and Weiss, often featuring the stone heliotrope, are quite collectible. The set I'm wearing came from Spooner's, which used to be a department store in Plymouth.

In the photo at the top I'm with another old thing - Molly the cat! She's 16 this year, which is quite old for a cat. My lavender jacket and ice pink top is from Kettlewell, jeans by M&S, shoes by Supadance.

Let's see how my blogging friends got on with This Old Thing. Here's Anna from Anna's Island Style

She says her all-in-one was someone's This Old Thing as they had donated it to a charity shop. Her sister saw it on a mannequin in a charity shop window and decided it would be perfect for Anna.  It fits like a glove and immediately became her choice for this month's theme. The all-in-one has no label, but Anna wore it at work last week and it earned her lots of compliments for its first outing. Her boots are old and are from Zara, sweater is from Primark, animal necklace is another charity shop find. Sunglasses are from Quay Australia.

Emma from Stylesplash, above, looks fabulous in something she had when she was 13! Her denim shorts  started life as jeans. She chopped them off a few years later, and recently Emma found them in the loft just before she went on holiday. She took them with her, and bought the yellow vest at her holiday destination. The shorts and vest (and Emma) are enjoying the sights of Madeira as we speak!

Here's Hilda from Over the Hilda: she is wearing several old things. First of all, a raincoat which belonged to her mother in law, and is about 40 years old. Hilda's jeans are at least 15, the top from Cos is 10 years at least, and the boots are ancient Carl Scarpa ... probably 20 years old.  Hilda admits she's a bit of a hoarder.

Finally Jacqui from Mummabstylish,  below, who's shopped her wardrobe and is wearing cream culottes from H&M years ago, a silky frilly blouse topped off with her really old and a very good friend - her denim jacket. She added a raffia bag and cream stiletto boots.

  1. I don't know, but I love it when I mix up some old stuff with the new stuff. It makes me happy. And I also think old and new fashion/accessories go very well together!

  2. Agree! Sometimes the old things have lovely memories attached to them. And old things always come back into fashion
