Find the Best Earrings for Your Face Shape - and Link-Up

Greetings, dear friends.  Earrings, like shoes, are a kind gift to ourselves. They're a way of wearing fashion, they don't rebuke us for getting bigger or thinner, and they add some sizzle to the most ordinary of outfits.

When I had my hair cut shorter a few months ago, I was excited to think that I could now wear lots of different types of earrings, because usually they were concealed by my hair.

But the truth is, my ears are not very pretty, the lobes are quite big, and my double piercing in each ear has stretched over the years.  So dangly earrings, even if I did want to wear them, look a bit dodgy.

There are two things to think about when choosing earrings: your face shape and your style personality.

I've never really known what shape my face is.  I used to think round when I was young, but that was because I had the plump cheeks of youth.  Now I see that my face is wider at the forehead and comes to a point, which is more heart shaped, although it's also becoming a bit square which is what is happens to all of us as our flesh slides irretrievably downwards.

To help you decide your face shape, here are some celebrities to helpfully guide you.

Heart Shaped Face

A heart-shaped face will typically have a larger, wider forehead, slender jawline and your cheekbones and forehead are the widest parts of your face. Represented here by Naomi Campbell, Cheryl Cole (or whatever she's calling herself these days), and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Balancing out the jawline with earrings that are wider at the bottom creates a flattering look, which is what Cheryl has done. Wide-based styles such as teardrops flatter the face and balance proportions perfectly.

Square Face

A square face have a forehead, cheekbones and jaw the same width, but the jaw will have sharp angles.  Square face shapes are similar in appearance to a round face, but have a more pronounced, wide jawline. A square face has very minimal curves to it. Here we see the square shaped faces of Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock.

Jewellery can help to flatter and soften your facial structure, with rounded, curved styles and flowing shapes - nothing too angular - proving the most impactful.

Round Face

The width of your face at your cheekbones and length of your face are roughly the same. They are bigger than the forehead and jawline, which will be about the same. The angle of the jaw is soft and much less defined than with a square face. The chin is rounder than with an oval face.  Here we see Drew Barrymore, Ginifer Goodman and Viola Davis.

Lengthening your facial silhouette - as opposed to widening it - is the main objective. To achieve this it's wise to avoid rounded earrings, and focus more on long, dangling styles to create that illusion of extra length.

Oval

Finally, the oval face. Oval shapes are defined by an oblong form. Oval face shapes are generally longer than they are wide, with wider cheekbones than the rest of the face. The jawline doesn't come to point but is very narrow and rounded, as seen on Tyra Banks, Julia Roberts and Rihanna.

The oval face is the easiest to dress, with almost every style of earring suiting and flattering the proportional silhouette. It's better to avoid anything with too much of a drop in order to avoid over-elongation, but everything from studs to huggies and hoops looks great on an oval face.

Finding Styles that Suit Your Style Personality

So that's the face shape advice.  More importantly, do the styles suggested suit your personality?  The reason I don't "do" dangly earrings is that I don't believe they suit me.  My style personality is quite minimal.  I don't like patterns much, except for polka dots;  I don't do boho or romantic;  my style is fairly classic but with a twist, something to make it look different.  I tend to keep my earrings simple, in the form of ball or pearl studs.

Here I am in three different types of earring.  Now the earrings at the top of the page, from Topshop, are fairly dangly but I like them for the big pop of colour they give. I must admit though, I have never actually worn them, so they're still probably too ornate for me.

On the left, a pair of round ornate earrings. They remind me of a pair I bought in Greece which were sadly stolen, but they're not as nice.  Not for me.  Centre:  my usual, two studs.  Usually they're both white gold, in different sizes, or sometimes a diamond with a white gold stud (as shown), or two pearl studs in different sizes. I always wear studs even when my hair hides my ears, just to appear groomed.  On the right: these crazy diamante earrings cost around $25 in Las Vegas. They're fun but I don't think I'll ever wear them.  They would be great for a round face!

Shopping for Earrings

With stud earrings, quality is best. They need to be real gold. I like good quality fake diamonds or pearls. Fashion retailers Topshop, Mango and Asos are unbeatable for latest trends at good prices.  Here's a selection available from Asos. I'd love to know in the comments if you have a particular style of earring you like, or if you wear any that catch your eye.

  2. I love earrings too - they're the only jewellery I wear! So I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article, thanks! I work at a lot of arts & crafts fairs & would recommend them as a great place to pick up beautifully handmade unusual earrings in all sorts of different styles.
