The Most Colourful Bag Collection Ever!

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton presents her collection of colourful tote and cross-body bags

Dear friends. Let me introduce you to my rainbow bag collection. I'll tell you a bit about them, a few tips I have as a multi bag user, and I'll style my latest acquisition.

You may be asking: why so many bags? As you may know, I've had colour analysis and am a Spring, and I just love the warm, bright colours of this season.  I have so much fun building outfits around my bags or shoes. Not for me a restrained black, navy or white bag.

Can I Lower My Cholesterol Through Diet Alone?

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton is attempting to lower cholesterol through diet alone with no statins

Dear friends. I've had a rude awakening. I need to radically change my diet after a routine NHS over 60s health check revealed high cholesterol. It was high both overall and for the "bad" sort, the LDL reading.

I like to keep out of the clutches of the NHS. I'm not on any prescription medications and consider myself fit and healthy.

Spring Style

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Dear friends.  I hope you had a joyful Easter, if it's something you celebrate. It was just the hubs and me on Easter Sunday, as both children and their kids had gone away. We had a lovely lunch at a local restaurant which was very busy and full of Spring delight.

I was inspired by Spring primroses to wear lime and yellow. It was undecided, weather wise: sunny intervals but quite windy and a few occasional showers.

At Last - Purple Trousers I Love

And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton in purple apricot and lavender

Dear friends. Do you long for a particular garment in a favourite colour, but are always disappointed by what you find?

My bête noires are denim skirts and purple trousers.  Denim skirts we will save for another day.

Barrel Jeans and Woven Mary Janes

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton on what she wore to the Turner amd Constable exhibition in London

Dear friends. As our "faux Spring" draws to an end for the time being, I was thrilled to get away with just a short jacket over jeans and a shirt for a visit to the Turner & Constable art exhibition.

Barrel jeans are still everywhere and I liked the mocha colour of these, from Reiss. One of the big trends for Spring Summer is woven Mary Jane shoes. I wear mostly flat shoes and it's great to see this style in vogue. Mine are current, from John Lewis. They were comfortable from the get-go.

Colourful Versus Neutrals

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in orange and purple as she debates wearing bright colours versus neutrals

Dear friends. Is purple and orange a combination you would wear? It's the challenge of the month over at the Kettlewell Colour Club.

For a moment I hesitated before giving it a go.

If you've been seasonally analysed as a Spring or Winter, your orange and your purple are bright and vibrant. A combination that could remind us of Halloween.

A Week of Outfits

 And #TuesdayTwirl
Is This Mutton's two favourite outfits from a week of dressing properly each day and not in athleisure.

Dear friends. I set myself a challenge to wear a proper outfit each day for a week.

Most days I wear athleisure all day.  It's not the trendy sort, either.

But as I miss my outfit round-ups of yore, when I was working, I decided to smarten up my act to wear more of my clothes. I'm showing you what I wore each day last week.

What to expect:  an ordinary 65 year old woman wearing colourful outfits and accessories to hopefully give you a bit of inspiration.

An Outfit to Scare the Husband

Is This Mutton experiments with a red outfit that would send her husband running for the hills

Dear friends. We were inundated on Instagram last week with suggestions of what to wear for Valentine's Day. Well, as Mr Mutton and I don't usually mark this in any way, I wasn't paying too much attention.

But then my new-to-me red skirt with purple flowers arrived from eBay.  It's a Boden skirt and you know my love for them.

Inspired by Demi Moore

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton in silk sleeveless bow blouse with patch pocket jeans - a soft power outfit inspired by Demi Moore in Landman

Dear friends. Have you discovered Landman on Paramount,  starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Jon Hamm? We absolutely love it, having discovered it recently when we swapped Disney for Paramount.

Demi Moore is married to wealthy oil company CEO Hamm. I was very taken with the power dressing outfit she wore when addressing the oil barons (plus some snippy young women who made a swipe at her).

Demi Moore in the blush blouse and cream suit in Landman which inspired Is This Mutton.

It turns out her cream suit and blush sleeveless Lavalliere blouse are by Tom Ford, and the blouse has sold out. Not that I would have bought it.  I bought a similar style from a new brand to me, Holland Cooper (not an affiliate link).

Blouses with bows are trending at the moment. They've become associated with Margaret Thatcher to our generation but I think the Demi look with the cream and blush is not at all Thatcher-looking. It's a different kind of power dressing.

I don't have much need for power dressing now I'm retired, so I paired the blouse with these fabulous new jeans from M&S. I noticed on the train that young women were all wearing flared jeans with a visible seam above the ankle. I'd nipped into M&S for some food bits and spotted these jeans with their patch pockets. And seam above the flare!

I'm wearing a 10 in Short (say it as it is, M&S!) which are a good length, provided they don't shrink.  I'm 5'3. (1.60). They look smarter and dare I say more flattering than barrel jeans. I wasn't quick to embrace flared trousers and jeans this time round but they are growing on me.

Strangely,  although these jeans were in abundance at their Oxford Street flagship, they're not available online. I even tried the product code. They cost £40.  M&S stock other brands which have similar patch pockets jeans.

The blouse I bought, the Ariella, is lovely quality, which is important for this type of fabric. It can be tied several ways. As you can see it's sleeveless and I shall enjoy wearing it on its own in the summer.

I didn't add a belt because it would have looked cluttered with the bow and patch pockets.

Demi wore hers with a cream blazer. I don't have any blazers but I tried it with my cream moto style Chloe jacket from Kettlewell.

Best Footwear for Flares

According to The Times, the best shoes to wear with flares are  pointy toed boots or kitten heels, or “low profile” trainers. These are streamlined and flat-soled, rather like a plimsoll.  They provide a sharper, more elegant finish than anything clompy. I added a little more glamour with gold ankle boots. Pointy ones! (Oliver Bonas, old).

Have you discovered Landman yet?  What's your view on pussy bow blouses? Too Mrs T, or a fresh new look? Do tell in the comments.

Winter Brights

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Dear friends. Winter is wonderful for wearing colour. So many opportunities to layer up! I wear colour throughout the year. It's badly needed in the colder months. Here are a few of my outfits lately.

I was recently ironing (yep, still do it) when I noticed what a good combination this light blue is with pink. It's a colour called Hawaii from Kettlewell,  worn with pink rose sleeveless cardigan and mock turtle neck in shocking pink. The necklace is by Kama4 You at Etsy. I have it in several different colourways.

Staying with blue and pink, this is a silky roll neck in Dutch Blue with wrap in Flamingo Pink and chinos in Coral. I had these chinos in size small and they were a bit too big. I was thrilled when an XS pair suddenly appeared in the Kettlewell sale. They're a little shorter than I would like (I prefer my ankles not to be grazed!) but very soft and comfortable.  Scarf is one of the Spring variations at My Season. Leopard belt, old, Kettlewell.

Wearing the same chinos with a crew neck jumper in Apple, silky roll neck in Pale Peach (both Kettlewell) and rose gold boots, old. Necklace from Polka Dot Drawer at Etsy. The silky roll necks are wonderful for layering - I have several.  Below: adding my trusty Barbour, which is exactly the right colour. It's very warm and hooded - I often wear it on forest walks.

How are you finding winter so far? (And summer, for those in the southern hemisphere, where it's very HOT at the moment).  Also - do you still do the ironing?! Do tell in the comments.

A Sparkling Start to the Year

 And TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton in everyday sequins with brown cardigan and white jeans for 2026

Dear friends. Here's a sparkly daytime look which echoes my mood. Full of positivity for a New Year.

You might think white jeans is a bizarre option for winter but I rarely wear jeans in summer (too hot) and think they're perfect for the dry sunny days we're having at the moment.

Wear Bright Colours in Winter over 60

 And #TuesdayTwirl

Over 60s blogger Gail Hanlon shows you to wear bright colours in winter over 60

Dear friends.  Yellow was all the rage in summer but it's less common now, both in the shops and in the wild.

It's such a cheerful colour, perfect for the dark and gloomy days of Winter.

Life Lately: Retro Dress, Nails and More

 & Tuesday Twirl

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in patterned retro style dress and aqua moto jacket with long blue boots

Dear friends. It's been a busy time lately, with a trip to Plymouth last week for the scattering of Mum's ashes, and another trip this week.

I've been buying Christmas presents and studiously avoiding Black Friday deals  (if you weren't going to buy it at full price, don't buy it!).  I've bought a few new beauty products recently and will cover them today.

RETRO DRESS WITH LONG BOOTS

This is my second "retro style" dress from Madcap England. It's sleeveless but I find they work better in autumn/winter with a jacket and maybe a silky roll neck underneath, as the material is not what I'd consider for summertime.  It's a silky type of scuba material. It skims over curves, lumps/bumps.

This dress isn't in Spring colours as such but I added some brightness with my Roxy in aqua (Kettlewell) and red handbag  (Etsy).  The suede boots are old, from Boden.

It's shorter than I would normally wear, but I think that's fine with opaque tights and boots.

Tomorrow I'm off to have my hair done, having let two months elapse which means my roots are pretty awful.

NEW BEAUTY BUYS

My nails and cuticles are finally in a good place, thanks to products from Manucurist  (serum and oil). and taking Biotin daily.

I bought some non-gel nail polishes from a new brand, Harriet Westmoreland. Harriet is well known for her "clean" nails: short, natural looking and beautifully manicured (Nigella Lawson is a fan).  I bought the basecoat, topcoat and two of the Vanilla Gloss Polishes.

It looks darker in the bottle than it actually is.

I can't resist a beauty box, and the Boots Show Stopper box caught my eye.  It was £90, but well worth it because there's very little I wouldn't use, or don't like.  I'm already using the Grown Alchemist Polisher and Boots Berry Lip Sleep balm, plus the Caroline Herrera perfume La Bomba and Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve Lip Treatment in Strawberry Glimmer.

I've also bought a couple more pieces for autumn/winter, a brown suede skirt and brown cord jeans. I'll show you these next week.

How do you like your nails? Long with nail art, or short and subtle?  Do tell in the comments.

Nothing to Wear!

                                       And #TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton owns up to a problem that's far from unique. A wardrobe full of clothes, but nothing to wear.

Dear friends.  I'm sure we've all been there. A wardrobe full of clothes and an event to attend. But suddenly you can't find anything to wear.

This happened to me on my birthday. We were going out for dinner followed by the theatre. Originally I'd planned to wear purple. One of my husband's presents was a gorgeous purple bag.

But I'd worn purple at a pop concert the week before and wasn't motivated to wear it again.

What I Wore to the Versace Retrospective

 And Tuesday Twirl

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in purple and yellow print trousers bought on ebay

Dear friends. I was not a Versace fan back in the day. I thought his designs were a bit gaudy. But after seeing the wonderful Retrospective in London,  I've changed my mind.

There are lots of bright colours,  yes (and many of them in my Spring colours), but also some sublime tailoring and quite subdued outfits you could wear to the office. Princess Diana was a fan, as was Elton John and of course Elizabeth Hurley.

Life Lately: Teal, Tartan, Violets

 & Tuesday Twirl

Is This Mutton in corduroy teal dress with aqua accessories

Dear friends. A mixed hors d'oeuvres today. I'm sharing which outfit I wore to the school reunion, a recent cord dress acquisition, a perfume search and more.

First up is a soft corduroy dress.  It's exactly the type of dress I look for in winter:  not too long and with a gathered waist that helps create definition where none exists.  Plus corduroy is On Trend, not that most of us care too much about that.
