Three Trends with Your Own Clothes

 And TuesdayTwirl

Is This Mutton shows how you can pull off 3 micro style trends, pop of red, jeans with a good top and dash of animal print, with your existing clothes.

Dear friends. We don't need to give up on trends as we get older.  They can be adapted, even from the catwalk,  and give us a contemporary edge.

It can be simple things like switching to a particular length of dress or skirt; putting away round toed footwear in favour of pointed; pairing certain colours and creating different shapes.

In today's post I'm looking at two micro trends,  a pop of red, and the perennial favourite,  jeans with a good top. For those who love a bit of animal print I've added a third trend, subtle leopard.

POP OF RED

It should literally be just a pop,  applied to one, max two, accessories. It's a great way to liven up neutrals or a tonal look.

I'm wearing a tonal outfit of blue hues. I don't have a suitable red scarf (the ones in trends at the moment are hanky style or small squares) so I'm wearing a strawberry pendant and a belt in hibiscus red.

Your pop could be a beret, pair of gloves and/or a scarf as it gets colder; red boots, tights, earrings - or a dash of red lipstick.

Jacket, belt and short sleeved jumper (old) all Kettlewell.  Trainers, Gola. Flared patch pocket blue jeans M&S.

JEANS WITH A GOOD TOP

Is This Mutton in style trend Jeans with a Good Top. Tie blouse in silk satin worn with black barrel jeans and gold T bar shoes.

This is a combination that's great for social events where you want to look relaxed but not too casual. A "good top" is one that has some noticeable style additions. The material might be silk or satin. It might have pretty buttons, ties, or an asymmetric neckline. For evening, it could be halter neck or sequinned. I've added gold flat T bar shoes to keep it on the dressier side.

My jeans are black narrow barrels. Jeans are available in every shape imaginable at the moment,  but for extra trend points go for barrel, carrot, bootcut or flared rather than narrow. The jacket is in a blouson shape which is also on trend.

My shoes are a bit of a coup. I've had a similar pair from Boden for several years, and they've literally worn out. I was expecting it to be hard to find a replacement but these Anais shoes from Air & Grace fit the bill perfectly.  They're also comfortable.  Pointy toes are back in vogue, which I love (I know many of you prefer round toes).

Jeans Whistles, jacket M&S, blouse Holland Cooper (several colours available).

SUBTLE LEOPARD

I find large animal prints too overpowering on me so a dress, top or blouse is out. I find a belt is a great way to use it, and it works as a neutral. My trainers also have a bit of leopard print.

The trendiest animal prints at the moment are the black and white cow hide or zebra types. But really, anything goes. I've seen plenty of accessories in snake print too.

These barrel jeans are wider than the black ones above. They're in a shade called light heather from M&S. They're mid rise, which on me, at 5'3, is high rise but with less bunching of material when I sit down.

Jacket, current, Kettlewell.  Jeans M&S, current. Trainers Gola. Belt and top, old, Kettlewell.

ANOTHER TREND - PENCIL SKIRT WITH BAGGY TOP

I meant to photograph this one as well but couldn't find my Kettlewell ruched skirts. They're ideal for this, being slim fitting pencil skirts.  Any type of pencil or ruched skirt can work for this: you must add an oversized top, probably a jumper.

Do these micro trends interest you? Do you like a pop of red, or animal print? Do tell in the comments.

  1. Thank you very much for the feature! Barrel jeans are so good! I easily could wear them every day. It's good to try to corporate trends in your outfits i think, but still stay true to yourself. That way your outfits will look modern. But that is my opinion.
