Bookshelf Update

Is This Mutton reveals an exciting queue of books waiting to be read, plus those recently devoured.

Dear friends. I'm excited to share my latest book arrivals with you. It's a good situation where I have a bit of a queue developing.

Here's a quick overview of what I've recently read, plus new arrivals. Books I bought myself are indicated with an asterisk. The rest were provided as advance digital copies by NetGalley and the publishers in return for an honest review.

RECENTLY READ

We Tell Lies* is the latest psychological thriller from KL Slater. My review will be published on Friday (Oct 16).

The Favourite Child* by Sarah Edghill will also feature in my Friday reviews post (Oct 16).

As will this work of non-fiction by Irish author Evelyn Mary.

NEW ARRIVALS

Wolo’s universe ended in an instant when his pregnant wife Yoma was killed in a tragic car accident. Now, three years later, he has received a letter from Victoria, the woman who was behind the wheel.

His mother insists he destroy it. Their family pastor says it is the work of the devil. But Victoria is asking to meet. Her heart is broken, too. This book is published in January 2027.

Connie and her daughter Jenn have never had an easy relationship. At eighty-seven, Connie can look back on a formidable career as a lawyer, fighting for women’s rights. Jenn meanwhile has built a quieter life. After all, it’s hard to be inspired by a mother who was never really there.

When Connie decides to host her own living wake, Jenn is drawn back into her orbit for four intense days. As old tensions rise and resentments threaten to spill over, Jenn braces herself for the worst. This book comes out in Feb 2027.

The Blackbird Conspiracy by Tariq Ashkanani*. Private investigator Callie Munro PI Callie Munro knows that the murder of her tech specialist inside his fortress-like Edinburgh flat wasn't random. He let his killer in.

What he left behind is far more dangerous: surveillance footage of a hit-and-run that official records insist never happened. As Callie digs deeper, witnesses begin to vanish. She suspects that a covert government operation is monitoring civilians and silencing anyone who gets too close.

Challenge!* by Anneka Rice. I've heard great things about this autobiography from TV presenter Anneka Rice. She opens up for the first time about her unusual childhood, revealing the crippling loneliness she felt as a child. The teenage years she spent running her household sparked the fierce resilience that would later define her.

When product designer Greg Holdsworth discovered his timber-loving father-in-law buried in a coffin of plastic handles and printed fake woodgrain, his reaction was less grief than affront — an inauthentic object, a final dishonesty dressed up as respect.

Leave No Trace is the story of what he did about it, and of the decade it cost him.
