Lux Layering! Style Not Age Challenge

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton shows how to layer up for warmth and style, without turning into the Michelin Man.

Greetings friends. It was my turn to choose the challenge for Style Not Age this month, and, with rising fuel bills in mind, I chose Lux Layering.

During lockdown we became familiar with athleisure, wearing sweat pants, fleeces, onesies and PJs (and occasionally a smart shirt for a Zoom call). But judging from retail sales, it seems we're heartily sick of this trend and want to look smarter.  So how to keep warm?

Layering is the answer, particularly several thin layers, which will keep you warm without that unfortunate Michelin Man effect.
Create several thin layers to stay warm this winter without looking huge. Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton shows you how in the Style Not Age Challenge.

Tights and skirts are warmer than jeans so I'm wearing a camel ruched skirt (Kettlewell) with rose gold boots (old, Hush). I've got a couple of the ruched skirts: no fastening, it's pull-on, and it seems to be flattering on nearly everyone.

I added a silky roll neck - in macadamia - with an essential V neck t-shirt in soft sage, and a short tie wrap in light sand (all Kettlewell). The scarf pulls the colours together: Marks and Spencer, current.

If it gets colder, I have a pointelle sweater (Cotton Traders, gifted) to wear over the top, plus these handy wrist warmers, made from recycled cashmere, from Turtle Doves. I wore the wrist warmers a lot on my winter walks last year. They're warmer than gloves because they extend up the wrist and warm the blood.

The finishing touch for a very cold day when you want to look stylish indoors with the thermostat turned down. The Perfect Pointelle sweater from Cotton Traders and wrist warmers made from recycled cashmere.

Now let's see how the other girls got on, starting with Anna from Anna's Island Style. She is wearing trousers at least 10 years old from New Look; a jacket and lace blouse found in charity shops,  worn over a vest from H&M. The belt is from Amazon adding a bit of luxury to the look

Emma from Stylesplash is wearing a matching waistcoat and trousers set from The Hippie Shake over a thin turtle neck top, topped off with a burnt orange coat from Anthropologie.

Irish blogger Hilda from Over the Hilda is showing us a gorgeous tonal outfit she wore the other night, when temperatures dropped and she needed the coat  (check out her blog to see Hilda wearing the coat). Her layers are a leather jacket and silk shirt, both shopped from her wardrobe. The coat is an amazing sales purchase last year from Selected. Boots are a few years old from M&S.

Jacqui from Mummabstylish is looking fabulously stylish in River Island jeans, an old crochet top from Next, a new silky blouse from Zara in a stunning shade of green and her long line cream jacket. Jacqui has accessorized with matching green tie up shoes and her new bag from a recent trip to Savoca in Sicily.

I hope you enjoyed our Layered Lux outfits. See all the layering in action in each of the blog posts.

Have you thought about how you'll dress indoors to look smart while staying warm?  Do you have any favourite layering pieces?  I think I will be investing in some vests! Do let us know in the comments.
